On the Importance of Reading

Despite the fact that most people feel that reading is a leisure activity, it has enormously effected their lives in many diverse ways. I feel that something as simple as reading or writing will have an impact on a future job, position, or even a game show. I feel that the different will eventually turn out to be the more knowledge in different areas and fields you will come acquainted with. When I first started out reading, I read 100-paged fiction stories on dragons and medieval war. Then, as this subject became one of my top interests, I started reading non-fiction books about medieval warfare and even about different countries during that time. In comparison, my writing started out very poorly as I used run-on sentences and improper grammar and punctuation. This has advanced greatly overtime as I wrote more and more essays, papers, and short stories. Not only does reading and writing enhance over time, it also opens the door to absorb information which effects school performances.

To begin with, it has helped me learn things that are not taught in school or by a teacher. Reading magazines and newspapers daily informs me with what is going on in the outside world, and in my community. Most of the s in newspapers are about current events and issues. By reading these articles, I can now read faster and more efficiently. Also writing e-mails to my friends and relatives definitely enhances my way of writing a "friendly letter" which is not taught in school. This method teaches me the different techniques used for writing a friendly letter. For example, instead of starting my letter out with a formal introduction, I could just talk about what I have done today. Friendly letters are a type of writing which is not required to be taught, but is learnt on my free time. Lastly, reading short poems increases my knowledge of many different poetry methods and ideas. Since there are so many different poets in the world, I have learnt tons of styles just by reading a few poems. Poetry is a type of writing, which is not thoroughly taught in school, but I feel it is very important to learn. Every poem I read whether it is good or bad, it somehow helps my writing and understanding of poetry. This is why no matter what reading material or writing technique is used at home, it will somehow enhance your skills in that area.

Writing and Reading can also increase vocabulary. Using Microsoft Word while I type essays shows which words I have misspelled, and teaches me the correct way to spell them. There are always new and diverse words that I use when I type and I constantly misspell them. I eventually learn the right way to spell them due to the spellchecker. For example, I spelt medieval "mideveal" in this paper. The spellchecker underlined the word, and showed me the correct way to spell it. From now on, I will always remember it is spelled "medieval" just by writing this very paper. Also, Reading any type of material such as a book, magazine, article, or poem, will force me to approach new words that I have never seen before. I then find out what the word means and get the reward of learning a new word. Later on in life, when I am faced with the same word on a test or exam, I will get that question right just because I read a lot when I was younger. Lastly, using a thesaurus while typing or writing a report will expand the different adjectives that can be used in replace of simple ones. A thesaurus can transfer plain, bold words into interesting, uncommon words. When I was younger, I frequently used sentences like " The teacher was nice." Presently, I now make sentences like, "The extraordinary teacher was not only brilliant in every way possible, but his superfluous personality traits were definitely above and beyond the norm." A thesaurus is indeed a great vocabulary tool, which makes life a whole lot easier. Vocabulary is obviously increased and expanded due to reading and writing at home or at school.

Whether I read novels assigned by a teacher to subtitles on movies, it somehow always tends to increase my writing skills. Reading others work allows me to see the difference between his/her work and mine. The different words and sentence structures gives me ideas that makes my writing more efficient. If an author of a book uses lots of diverse adjectives and my work has very little adjectives, I would know that that is an area I need to work on. My next paper would then include more adjectives and will help out my grade. Also, learning from others mistakes will often times teach me the right way to write. As I notice a mistake in a piece of writing, I would fix it by substituting the right words or punctuation for the sentence. If a sentence includes a comma where it is not needed, I would know that it does not belong there. This method gives me practice for where commas are supposed to be placed, which has defiantly helped out my writing. Reading magazines and reading the subtitles on a movie also increases my writing skills. Magazines and movies help me out a lot in the field of dialogue between two people or multiple people. Magazines always have interviews with celebrities. When I read these dialogues, I constantly learn the correct punctuation for any type of conversation. I have now memorized all of the dialogue punctuation thanks to magazines and subtitles. These are just some of the many ways my writing skills has increased overtime.

In conclusion, reading and writing skills are increased constantly due to little things that most times are not noticed. Whether it is from a book to a poem, there will always be a way that it helps out your school performance. Reading and writing in general only helps absorb information, and enhance leisure or school related writing tasks. It has also made life itself so much easier because reading and writing are so beneficial for school and for life. How much you read and write today, will somehow affect your future job, family, position, or even your salary. So think about just how much better life could be if you just read and write a little more.
